Unlimited Blade Works by ErikShoemaker Unlimited Blade Works by ErikShoemaker
I recently stumbled accross the fate/type-moon universe and got addicted really fast to the setting and the amazing characters in the series. Here's my depiction of a fictional battle between Archer and Gilgamesh inside Archer's 'reality marble': a magical world materialized inside reality with a special set of rules. In this world Archer has access to an unlimited amount of weapons to defeat his enemy, hence the name "Unlimited Blade Works" (which I find pretty awkward actually, but maybe it's just me).

I have been experimenting with volumetric light in all of my recent artworks, but I feel like it turned out quite cool in this one. I'm also happy with the perspective, although admittedly the composition might appear confusing because of it. I actually spent a lot of time placing each sword and cog carefully to lead the viewer through the scene. I hope you like it!

The stocks I used came from visualhunt.com and photobash.org. Here's a comparision with the original plate:

The realism that you put on your digital works of art is incredible. You can see how the bat battle took place in some desert in the United States (I'm not American). I love your work is amazing that touch of realism and fantasy at the same time you give your art with the fantasy of that boy-adult floating for what I think to fight with the other. And the boy on the floor using all the swords on the ground to save himself. Unlimited Swords Work to win the war. Once again your work is incredible I love it, keep it up

I keep waiting for the picture to move or pan in closer. It's great and has depth. The Lighting is spot on. The detail makes me feel that this you could move in any direction or zoom in. You did a great job on the depth. The detail is good. There's very little I can find with this picture. More in the series would be interesting to build a world of art of it. Some of the swords are a light odd but otherwise, I can't see how you improve much on this. You should be very proud of this piece.

I've been inhaling all sorts of Fate stuff since then :D, unfortunately a lot of it was kind of a let down. Like Apocrypha, or Extra Last Encore, which is less than impressive so far. :|

Aww, OK it had it's good sides, like some of the action scenes for example. I couldn't get myself to care about any of the characters, there were just too many of them. They ended up focusing on Ruler, Astolfo and Sieg, all of them pretty much annoying to me. :XD:

If i had one complaint (and it would be shallow) it is that there is no central fine detail in the place of importance. When you look at an area with your eye, it sees its focal point more clearly than anywhere else, even if its at a distance. The amount of detail in the central sword draws the eye to the center rather than the fight i presume the artist wants you to focus on. The eye would be drawn more to the distant fighters if more detail was focused there specifically rather than anywhere else. Additionally you could draw attention with distinct contradictions of color. For example: darker clouds behind Gilgamesh and more light golden colored portals behind him. Excellent piece though, well beyond my ability.

Thank you for the critique! I agree that's a problem which I tried to compensate by placing the swords in such a way that they lead the eye to the fight, and by using the red color. It's difficult when the supposed focal point is so small lol. Thanks again for taking the time to write this. Happy 2018 to you!

Havn't seen unlimited blade works yet, but thought Fate Zero was quite amazing. Great scene, characters are well done.

Fate/Zero comes with an intense story and great action, but Unlimited Blade Works really had lasting impression on me because of its characters. I must say I'm a big archer fanboy. >_> I do recommend giving it a try! Thanks a lot!

Hm funny, what do you mean with "lighting + apex blur"? Now I am confused, especially since apparently I did spawn it. xD
But, you're welcome! ^.^

it's called analog efex pro and I don't know why I abbreviated it to 'apex' XD it's part of the Nik collection. I use mainly the bokeh blur filters from that plugin.

Ahh ok, yep I use Apex too then, sometimes. :P I also like the scratch plates and such for grimy artworks, and the film layers can give it a nice touch too...
But, this one in particular crashes PS about 1 of every 3 times so... I lost plenty of work to it... -.- Sometimes I just forget it can screw me up, and so it does. xD

(and when it's a plug-in crash Photoshop won't auto-recover my files :s)

Actually I had this problem for the first time last week and it happened to me two times. Super annoying! I have to remember saving my file before opening the plugin. I was looking for a way to recover the files but it seems there is none.

Yeah... I've looked at ways to recover Photoshop files until plain desperation. When you have not minded saving for 3 hours and it crashes it's like... you just want to die lol.
But I neither have found a way that's worked for me, I can now find the tmp files but for some reason they never seem to be what I'm looking for. Gotta wonder if something "more" happens with those files if it is not a PS crash but a plug-in one.

Yes 3 hours is a lot but when I really get into it sometimes I just go into auto-pilot mode...

Do you apply the plug-in filters on the full-sized images? I have noticed recently that the plug-ins are terribly unstable if I go up in resolution. I usually apply the filters on my web-sized images, where they work fine most of the time. It's faster too, but unfortunately I cannot properly integrate them in my psds.

Thank you! What do you mean by "the grid"? If that's a special PS tool, then I didn't. :D But I usually add perspective lines and vanishing points by hand to keep scales and angles in check.
