Shai-Hulud and the God Emperor by ErikShoemaker Shai-Hulud and the God Emperor by ErikShoemaker
EDIT 10/14/17: WOW, I had always hoped for a DD on this, but didn't think I'd get it after all this time lol. Thanks so much to cosmicbound for suggesting and TsaoShin for featuring it!
Unfortunately I still haven't gotten around to fixing the 'thopters' and adjusting the worm design. Here's an alternate version that might please the die-hard Dune fans a bit more :)

God Emperor Leto II by ErikShoemaker
----------------------------------------------------------------

My tribute to the inspiring scifi saga 'Dune' created by Frank Herbert. This is a fictional setting not depicting any specific scene from the books. The foreground shows one of my favorite and for me most inspiring characters of the series, the God Emperor Leto II.

Creating the worm turned out to be a really challenging exercise. I went through so many stages, completely overhauling the worm's design several times with new textures and poses. My first idea was to use a caterpillar as a reference, which turned out to be horrible. I even considered a seashell in between. Can you guess the reference animals of the final version? It's a mix of three if you count the teeth as well. ;)

Shai-Hulud and the God Emperor by ErikShoemaker features an epic sense of scale ( Suggested by cosmicbound and Featured by TsaoShin )
:icongazbo-silver:
As I'm not an artist myself I always find that I feel a little under-qualified to critique so I will keep it short and sweet.

Overall I think this work is great and for the most of it, the scale and grandeur of the worm is really spectacular and makes you stop in awe of the size of the beast! The texture of it scales is excellent.

Love the muted coloured skies that another DA critique has mentioned as this balances nicely with the sand and the tone of the worm itself - nothing bright and glaring that could have easily spoilt this work.

My only suggested feedback is that for such a huge beast I would have expected a little more of a dust storm arising from it thrashing about than what is shown - the dust and debris would be everywhere!
Also I think the helicopter that is flying in on the left hand side to me appears out of perspective with the character on the rocks and the people on the sand.

Only small points but thanks for sharing and keep up the amazing work!

:iconmgafm:
The piece overall is beautifully rendered and laid out, but could be improved with some small tweaks.

The scale doesn't seem quite right. The helicopter nearest the camera seems too small as compared with the body of the figure. The rocks by the figure are rendered extremely sharply, with high contrast, which draws the eye out of the edge of the frame. The shadows in these rocks seem to be going in a different direction than that of the main figure and the creature. All of the shadows are pretty soft within the landscapes, which makes the harsh shadows feel awkward.

Likewise, because everything is in focus, there's no sense of distance. A little more aerial diffusion and some cheating to blur a little bit of the details in the less relevant areas of frame (including the sky) would make it look more realistic.

Finally the horizon is dutch, which makes it look like everything is falling to the left slightly. Because you've got good weight on either end of the frame, the image would probably be well served by just slightly rotating it.

Hi! I'm not surprised :) My worm is inspired by the book "Dune", and this book has inspired many people before in all types of media. It's one of the reasons that huge sandworms often appear in deserts in movies and games.
Glad you like it!

I love the first Dune book a lot.  So much so I did a book cover in vector for my typography class a few years ago.  I had never read the other books past the first one and then for my cap stone class I created two more covers for the sequels.  I picked up the second book and got only a third of the way into it before having to put it down.  I just couldn't get into it.  But because I was doing those covers I researched past those books.  The instant I saw your piece come up, and then read the title, the images I had in my head of the book were suddenly staring me in the face.  Even if the worm isn't the classic design how can you NOT think of Dune when you see a massive worm in a desert?  This is a damn fine piece and you should be consulted for the rumored series they are planning.  You would make a killer concept artist for the show.

haha thanks so much for the great compliment! I can see where you're coming wrong regarding the books.. the follow-ups are something else entirely. I didn't hear anything about a show, but I read recently that the director of Bladerunner 2049 is going to pick it up for a movie. :eager:

You're right about the movie.  I guess the article I read about it some time ago mus have mentioned a TV series in passing.  If they do a new movie I am all for it so long as it is closer to the book.  And to be honest with as long as that book is they could easily break it into two movies.  But if they want to go past that then a TV series is a better idea.  Especially if you can get it done in a Game of Thrones style series and put it on Netflix.

But I do mean it when I say you should work on it as a concept artist.  I think they would be at a loss at not having your talents on hand.

I'm not kidding. I'm still in the middle of the book series right now, but so far I'm loving it. I totally get why you did fan art from it. In the past I kind of thought about reading the first book but I didn't find the motivation until recently. Then again, I was trying to plow my way through A Song of Ice and Fire for the past 3 years so I didn't have time to give another series the same attention. XD Anywho, you're welcome. The artwork is fantastic. =)
