Mostly fan art, unless it is about technical painting and concept art.

Oh and those 640x420 my naked skin CAPTURES!

Photomanip?!?!?!?! you gotta be kidding me?!
Just because techniques are PARTLY unconventional and mostly unknown?!?!?!

It is usually people who have no idea about nothing who vote that. I would personally serve their useless holes if it comes to reasoning.

Digital painting?!?!?!?!?!?!?!!? Are you nutttttts?! go pick something a little less technical people.

But seriously, I think you should have an "other" option. Cause all the above are at some level some respectful genre of art. I just personally happen to dislike the manga things.
Oh and those "hey look at me I am cheap and tastelessly naked" images, those are definitely not art.

lol yeah, that poll was pure sarcasm and I tried to avoid any "other" or "all" votes, I wanted people to decide. I admit, it's not very fair. :D

I totally agree with you about the "artictic" nude-myspace shots, they are kind of annoying, though I don't browse that section too often lol. And I honestly don't know why people would choose digital painting, that's just silly.

Yeah I got that!
Obviously the reason for the "why" is lack of knowledge.
And about the nude captures, that makes me miss the old front page on v.5 where we could choose what to have on it. that was a good one!

I voted fan art but really any of them if done well are extravagant. For example, Kire's Zelda piece could be considered fan art. Fan art is just the one that has the worst good:bad ratio in my opinion

fan "art"
nothing original there, except the idea of first creator.

i am really surprised of the results from this poll
i never expected "abstract" and "photomanipulation" to be on the first places
and if literature is not art then..
ok i stop now.

I voted for dolls and fashion. ^^; Oookay, my very good friend does that and I know it takes a lot of time to do it pixel by pixel, buuut... I don't particularly like the outcomes. xD

Good point about everything, especially abstract. ;) I feel dumb when I look at it. "Oh right, some scratches and splatters... now what's so special about it?"

If there was an option "digital collages", I would have voted for it and meant it. :| I think this stuff is (partially? ;P ) responsible for "cut and paste" argument against photomanipulation. People make collages and show them off as photomanips, and then it's insanely hard to explain to viewers that photomanips are different! >.< Whenever I tell someone I'm doing photomanips, they ALWAYS think they're collages (or photo retouch... =_= ) and when I show them, they don't believe they are made from photos. >.>
I respect traditional collages but when digitals are only about stamping a brush and pasting some texture over stuff... NO. I've been doing digital collages before photomanips and I can't say they're special. I know several persons making collages and their techniques are basic versions of some of photomanipulation techniques. The collages always felt poor and... without depth to me. Of course, I could be completely wrong and simply not understanding it. >__>

I don't know much about collages but for me they were always a basic form of photomanipulation with simple techniques. I think they are more about the message, similar to caricatures which maybe aren't as good as other drawings but imply a stronger meaning.
I personally really hate when people depreciate photomanipulations. Sometimes they don't even know what a photomanipulation is, then they either think it's a painting or a photo.
"So you didn't paint it yourself/didn't take the photo yourself?"-"Oh okay..." :| As if I wouldn't have done anything to it or I didn't spend much time on the making.

Fan art because there is no real meaning behind it.
I'll give it props when someone uses it to depict an entirely new meaning.

I think many people underestimate abstract art. Abstract art is not scribble scrabble, splatter and brush strokes, it's a very broad form of art. It can be very gestural or very colorful. Some abstract art has to do with line and form others with values and focus. Some are just a mixture of paints but still there is work put into it to show something or to show how color works and texture works.

Yeah, actually you can call each of this point arts.

I don't rly agree with the Fan Arts point, since they just use the characters of the animes, though they still use their own idea.
Also photography got kind of art in it, though there are not many pictures taken, that you can call "art". I'm one of those pretending, that it's mostly a matter of facts. Of course, sometimes there are good ideas and stuff, nice photos that you can call art, but most of the time it's just the nature being the artist.

Fan-art is the obvious choice for the majority, but if you ask me - a DIGITAL fan-art that took hours, perhaps weeks to do and was done with style, skill and originality (yeah, originality DOES exist in fan-art, just look and my "Yoshi's fruit bowl lol...THAT's never been done before ;)) - deserves more place as being considered art than a canvas with paint randomly splashed on it in a matter of minutes, and a "deep conceptual meaning" slapped on with the same amount of thought and time spent as the paint splatters itself  When I see stuff like that auctioned for thousands of dollars when I have made little over 10 bucks in print sales here, part of me dies inside :depressed:

Well, I didn't like to choose it but from these - yes I think it's the most acceptable answer. That's why I chose it. I do know that some fanart is amazing and all but on my scale original characters/stories are just higher on the list that's all. (:

Recently someone said about space art that he doesn't consider it as art in any way, no matter how well done it is technically. His reason was that it looks all the same and doesn't imply any concepts/unique ideas or creativity.
I do agree in some extent that space art is compared to other styles of art not the most original, but still, to say that it's not art is an incongruous statement.
Reply
:iconcommandersozo:

I would disagree with his statement. To really put together a good space piece, a lot of skill and creativity is needed. Certainly, not all space art I've seen displays this creativity or skill (Mine included, ;) , but that's a WIP), but I think there is enough imaginative, mind bogglingly good space art around to put that argument to rest.

lol, shit what's everyone complaining about fanart :'D
even though it's not their own character, it's still quite an achievement to make it look good.
perhaps it's even more difficult than with a normal drawing/painting, because then you can adjust anything you like if you paint one thing in the wrong direction or w/e.
