Prometheus by ErikShoemaker Prometheus by ErikShoemaker
This image was created for a competition on [link], where the objective was to turn the following concept art into a photorealistic matte painting: [link]

The contest was fun and very challenging. I worked a good 50 hours on my entry and there are still many things I'd like to change but I just can't work on it anymore and time until deadline has run out anyway.

You can also find a couple of wip pictures in this thread: [link]

I don't expect to win anything, but I learned a lot during the process and now I have a cool piece in my gallery. It will also be part of my 2013 calendar. :)

Hope you like it!

okay this is my 8th critique ever so don't kill me..um

This is amazing to say the least the details and the time it took you to make this shows that there was a lot of effort put into it
the blue and the clouds make it stand out to even anyone

It's very well done and simply breath taking especially the moon? planet? looks to be the main focus but I assume it was meant to be the air craft rather then the moon or planet.

I wish I could say more but this is as close as I get to a solid critique. so forgive me if I messed up I hope you think this is fair enough for you

I love how this picture just takes you to another world by just looking at it. Your work is indeed very detailed and I can tell you took a lot of time working on it.I like the clouds that surround the portrait, it somehow makes think of me of being in sky or looking at oceans parted. Science fiction is always interesting, to think of the possible road in the future the world may take. The idea of having an eclipse amplifies the theme, and the sun coming from the corner brightens up the whole image Just looking at this exquisite work of art is breath-taking. Very well done!!!!

This one's almost great although to be honest it's the composition they came up with for the competition. Still, you made it pleasant -- as did other contestants to be fair!

It's incredible how many shapes you can get only from clouds, and how solid it all looks. Also I just discovered Mattepainting.org from this post (too bad your wips there aren't showing anymore), so thanks for that. :)

it's not the most active place though (not that I'm around there a lot), I guess you'd have more chances to get feedback on forums.cgsociety.org/index.php?
The wips are all horrible. You didn't miss aynthing. :D Not sure I still have them at all.

Took a bit but just went around there to check it out, thank you so much for the link. Definitely a lot more going on in there and it is also rather scary for me at this point haha! So much stuff I don't know anything about, but certainly a really good source of information... instant bookmark. :)

yeah the quality around there is insanely high, I took part and followed the monthly matte painting challenges once in a while. The competition was insane! Sadly they are not running regularly anymore.

Looks like a great place to learn, I've been toying with the idea of ZBrush for a while and now I can finally run it... Would take me a long while to feel ready to partake though. :P

so you have a new computer now? ;) cool! Yeah I'm so lazy to learn new software although it would be super useful for me. I recently started getting into daz3D at least. :D

:D Yeah, up and running, with one dead pixel too, but it's not very noticeable in a 1440p screen... daz3D is a very awesome tool for manips too, definitely a must have even if it's only to render model back shots, I could use so many of those with poses and stuff, looking to get into that too, did before, but it used to crash my old laptop. Now step by step, learning some new tools slowly hehe...

How does one manipulate clouds like that? Are there certain tools? Or did you paint it all using a brush?

In essence I used tons of different photos, selecting only certain areas of the cloud and transforming it to get the perspective right. Then you have to adjust the color and contrast to blend it appropriately. It helps a lot to use only photos with similar lighting conditions, but it will still take plenty of time and patience!
This set contains some brushes which can mimic clouds, I used them to improve the blending of the various photos: www.deviantart.com/art/My-Brus…

Ahh I see, thanks a bunch for your help, I was trying to make clouds by brushes alone, I guess that didn't turn out too well especially with MY painting skills hahahaha.
